Home Improvement Tax Credits

Posted December 5, 2007

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 is about to expire. To qualify for a tax credit of up to $500 dollars certain energy efficient products must be installed by Dec. 31.

Besides trying to schedule work completed before the end of the year, one of the catches to the tax credit is that the improvements must be done to your primary residence.

Two improvements that I would consider are adding insulation to attic space and installing a tank-less hot water heater.

To redeem the federal energy efficiency home improvement tax credit, homeowners must provide a Manufacturer’s Certification Statement, purchase receipt and use IRS Form 5695.

For more information regarding qualifying products, visit the Alliance to Save Energy and the DOE at www.ase.org/taxcredits.

You can review form 5695 at www.irs.gov.
