Survey reveals components of ideal kitchen
Posted December 13, 2007
The “ideal” kitchen is “comfortable, open, warm, light, happy, calming and homey” according to a recent survey by Research and Markets Ltd of 10,000 American consumers.
They described their old kitchens as “boring, cluttered, dark and confining.”
Respondents felt that the kitchen should be the center of the home. Specifically it should facilitate socializing and bonding; sharing memorable experiences; evoking welcome emotions; and building warm and lasting memories.
This study found that 30% of remodelers would spend more money if they had to do it over, while only 7% said they would spend less money. Of those who would spend more money, the key differences would be upgrading the cabinets and increasing the size of the kitchen. I always tell my clients I’d rather include items from their wish list and delete them later if cuts need to be made. It think it’s much better to know if something will fit into the overall plan than to later regret not trying.
A central island cooktop with special elements such a built-in grill, a wok or a griddle was number one on the wish list of those surveyed. I think this is due to the increasing popularity of European Kitchens. Many ads show an island with a cooktop and a sleek hood above it.
I hope these survey results will inspire your remodel if your realtor tells you your outdated kitchen is the reason you home has not sold.
