Resist the urge to over-improve

Posted November 9, 2007

When remodeling for resale homeowners always wants to maximize their money spent. However, once a person has lived in a house for a while he or she often has a dream of what the house could be. And that dream may out-price your home for the neighborhood.

If you can’t imagine remodeling your home any differently than they way you dreamed it try photographing homes in your neighborhood that are more average looking. Then come up with a list of more reasonable things you can do to increase your homes value.

If you feel your home is smaller than the ones surrounding it don’t build on an addition; instead think subtraction. By removing non load-bearing walls and combining rooms your interior will feel more spacious. Also consider decreasing attic space and raising ceiling heights to make rooms feel bigger.

Staying inside the footprint of your existing home will save you money and allow you to select higher quality materials, finishes and workmanship.
