Create Spaces to Sell your Home

Posted October 20, 2007

Reader Question: Due to a job promotion we need to move. My problem is that we never got around to decorating the whole house. I have a room that I use to store boxes in. What should I do with it?

If you have a room in your home that currently only gathers junk, repurposing will help your home sell faster.

Buyers need things spelled out for them. Changing an empty room into a bedroom is the best way to add value to your home - especially if the room is counted as a bedroom in the listing.

If you don't have an extra bed ask a neighbor if they have a bed or crib in storage you can borrow.

You don't need to go overboard filling the room with furniture. Add just enough to illustrate to the buyer the room's purpose.

Fewer furnishings will also make the room appear more spacious which is always good.

Other staging ideas that need little furniture include exercise room, meditation room, family game room or art studio.
