Tips for Cleaning Ceramic Tile
Posted September 10, 2007
While there are many cleaning products on the market suitable for cleaning tile and grout, you may have common household products sitting around that can work just as well at a fraction of the cost.
Coffee, tea, wine
Mix up a paste of baking soda with a little water. Rub the paste onto the stain, and leave it until dry. Rinse and wipe dry. Shaving cream sprayed on stains also does a good job. If your grout is colored test an inconspicuous spot first.
Cooking fats and grease
Use ammonia or a heavy-duty grease cutter to dissolve grease. Put the solution on the spots and allow the solution to soak in.
Mildew
Scrub with a toothbrush dipped in household chlorine bleach if you have non-colored grout. For colored grout try a paste of baking soda, water and white vinegar. Clean in small sections.
Mineral deposits
Wipe tiles with white vinegar or a solution of half water and half ammonia. Rinse and pat dry.
More tips
” NEVER use scouring powders or other abrasives as they will scratch the tile finish.
” Place a towel soaked in hydrogen peroxide on stubborn stains. Cover the towel with plastic wrap to prevent the peroxide from drying out too quickly
” After you remove the stains from your tile and grout seal it to make cleaning easier the next time.
