Martinez takes advantage of freedom

U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez loves America and the freedom it provides. Including the freedom to step down.
During a conference call with reporters, Martinez ruled out illness and political pressure as reasons behind his sudden departure. But beyond saying “It’s a free country,” he didn’t offer a definitive explanation for his premature departure. Last year he announced he would not seek a second term in the Senate.
Martinez confirmed rumors circulating throughout the day indicating he would not fill out his term, which expires early in 2011. He said he will continue in office only as long as it takes Gov. Charlie Crist to name a replacement. Crist, who is running for the seat, says he won’t name himself to fill out Martinez’s term.
“It is time to return to Florida and my family,” Martinez said.
He said he plans to go to work in the private sector but to remain active in the causes he believes in, particularly speaking out against the Castro regime in Cuba and speaking for the people of that country. He also said he will remain active in Republican Party politics.
Martinez said he spoke with Crist to let him know of his decision prior to his announcement.
