Today we finished an eight-game homestand. We've had a lot of late-inning excitement and drama. We went 3-5, but we were in all of them.
Tommorrow we go on a road trip to Dayton -- where they expect 10,000 fans all four nights. That will be fun for the boys. The only bad thing is it is a seven hour bus trip. I hope my body can move after that.
Tonight we lost 8-5, but I only saw five innings. I was ejected at the start of the sixth for (what he said) arguing balls and strikes. It was my first ejection, and I did not even use profanity. I knew when I went to him I was gone, but I needed to fire my team up, we had no energy. Oh well. We hit two homeruns right away, but then we fizzled.
In every game, I feel like everything will come together. I know no one works harder than we do, but I guess the toughest thing about managing is once the game starts it's in the hands of your guys. Sometimes that's a great feeling, and sometimes it makes your feel helpless.
Like tonight we had five errors. It does not make me mad because they are trying, and they are physical mistakes. But when I have to take guys out for not hustling, or knowing the number of outs... that hurts.
All in all, the progress here has been tremendous. I'm very proud of them. I can see that physical skills develop a lot faster than mental skills.
Baseball is one of those skills in life, like anything else, where you never stop learning. We just had Tom Kelly, a former manager of the Minnesota Twins who won two World Series, come through, and it is amazing what I learned. If you keep your head up and be attentive, you will learn five things everyday. It is fun.
My family is coming up here for the summer in about week. I can't wait. Cooper got to see the fireworks, and he still thinks everyone is there to see him, and maybe they are. If he keeps hitting, I might pinch hit him.
We'll keep in touch, and I would love to hear everyone's plans for the summer. I know congrats are in order for some of the little league teams down there. It looks like all of the teams did well in the county tournaments. Let me know how things are going.
