On the Scene: a campaign's 'command center'

Gretchen and Michael Church call it the mobile command center, a big white Cadillac loaded down with drinks, snacks and campaign fliers for School Board candidate Rick MacClugage.

Their mission: criss-crossing Collier County to monitor polling sites and deliver relief to weary MacClugage campaign volunteers standing outside the polls.

They carry a color-coded spreadsheet of each polling place, telling them the number of voters in each precinct, the number of ballots cast in that precinct at the last election and any gaps when the polling place will not have a MacClugage supporter standing outside to greet voters.

"I'm just a little tightly wound on Election Day," Gretchen Church said, pulling into the polling place at the Golden Gate Community Center this morning.
