Few legislative incumbents facing primary challenges

One state senator and a half dozen incumbent House members are facing intraparty opposition in the primary election.

Democratic state Sen. Gary Siplin of Orlando is opposed Tuesday by political novice Maurice Woodard.

Another Senate race being watched closely is the Republican contest in southwest Florida, where state Rep. Michael Grant of Port Charlotte faces former state Rep. Nancy Detert of Venice.

Former Florida State and pro football star Peter Boulware is making his political debut in a Republican House contest. He faces Jefferson County Commissioner Jerry Sutphin for the GOP nomination.

Republicans have a 26-14 advantage in the Senate and hold 77 of 120 seats in the Florida House. -- ASSOCIATED PRESS
