Swinr Flu in Collier - Personal Stories, by Brian Thornburg, D.O.

I see this as a blog created to allow families and individuals the opportunity to share their swine flu stories with the community in order to increase awareness and information.
This is not a forum to discuss the validity of the swine flu vaccine or the merits of a campaign to vaccinate the populace. It is about providing your story from a first person perspective to help everyone read firsthand accounts of how the swine flu affected them and/or their family. Hopefully this discussion will allow individuals to better understand what is happening so each person can decide with their doctor what the best plan of action is.

My position as a pediatrician, father and spouse of a pregnant wife is that each person should educate themselves on this topic. Unfortunately this is a difficult task as so much information is available. The CDC recommends the swine flu vaccine for everyone, especially children, young adults and pregnant women, yet health care workers filed a lawsuit in Federal court seeking to halt the distribution of this drug, charging that the FDA violated the law in its hasty approval of four swine flu vaccines by failing to scientifically determine neither the safety nor efficacy of the vaccines. Further, New York State mandated that all health care workers receive the swine flu vaccine then reversed its position after several lawsuits were filled against the State by Nursing Unions and other groups.
Locally, a letter was sent to all Collier County Public School students “strongly recommend(ing) that children receive the vaccine either at school or at their physician’s office.” Fourteen local pediatricians signed the letter and sixteen did not sign the letter.
It is easy to understand why everyone is so confused when there is a lack of consensus within the medical community. Contributing to the anxiety is the fact approximately 900 adults and 100 children have died in the United States from the swine flu as of October 17, 2009. However, it is known that the majority of these deaths occurred in individuals with underlying medical conditions but this does not make this fact any easier.

Please help our community by taking the time to post your experience with the swine flu and encourage others to do the same. A template of pertinent topics is listed below to aid in this presentation of “raw data.” Please cut and paste this chart into your entry. This organization will standardize information and cover the topic as a quasi-medical history (a.k.a. history of present illness.) Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for improvement.
