Naples and Marco Island Fishing Report

Weather heated up this week, so did the Fishing!

Posted November 1, 2006

This weeks fishing has seen a resurgence of bait in the area. Not the biggest bait but big enough to catch plenty of fish with it. The Snook and Redfish are hitting on most of the points between Naples and Marco. If you get there on a rising tide and have plenty of bait, take a small handful and pitch them out if the fish start popping get your lines out and start catching. If you don't see anything give it ten minutes then, if still nothing move on. I must of pulled up on 9 points today and only had one that the fish wouldn't bite on. We caught plenty of Redfish Snapper and Snook. We even caught a Gag Grouper that was an inch shy of legal. I thought it was going to pull my client overboard, but he did a great job of coaxing it out.

Fly Fishing the flats or Offshore is good too. The reds are there and with a keen Eye on the platform and a good caster you should do well.

Offshore is smoking right now. Not just because of the Smoker Kings, there is an endless array of species to catch. The wrecks about ten to twelve miles out are on fire. You can't put a bait in the water for more than a second without getting it slammed by something. If you like to fly fish than it is a no brainer out there. You need to net a lot of chummers to get them going but once you throw some in the water let the fly go and hold on, it will happen fast. These fish require excellent tackle, they are going to run well over 100 yards of backing and I have seen them eclipse 200 yards in a single run. I prefer the Bauer Extreme reels for these fish, they have the drag that can stand up to the battle. Matched with a TFO ten weight rod you will be in business. Make sure what ever outfit you use it needs to hold a minnumum orf 250 yards of backing. Good Luck and Good Fishing Roan z.
