The New Year haas come and Gone, Fishing Still Red Hot!
Posted January 5, 2007
I wanted to wait a couple days after my return from the Cold Country or should I say cooler country to the North. Not cool enough for the Ducks though, I should of kept going all the way to Canada, i think then maybe.
Fished two days on my return, one night and one day, with not much difference in outcomes. Both were Fly trips and on Both Trips we put a pretty good hurting on the Snook around the Marco Lights and in The Passes. The Reds are scattered out in the bays and the Trout which I assumed would be in their winter grounds by now are where they usually are in Fall, scattered on the flats.
Funny Year, this hot weather has the fish in a funky mood. Feeding for short periods on the the incoming and outgoing tide and then laying off a bit. The back country has fish along with the passes, so it isn't a real difficult time finding them, but you got to catch the feeding frenzy just right or the hits come slow. Atleast on Fly anyway.
Bait Fishing on the other hand I understand from a very reliable source is still fast and furious. Eventhough you can catch bait offshore there has been a slowdown on strikes on live whitebait with the fish opting for Tipped Jigs and Shrimp. Fish aren't used to seeing white bait this time of the year so they sometimes get weary of it if you throw it to them and will shut off on it opting to hit Live Shrimp or tipped Jigs better. Just a little tip from the back of the brain that stores all that fishing information.
No report on the freshwater, but i would imagine with the hot water and Full Moon I would expect the bass to be bedding in a big way. When the bass are bedding slow down a bit and work your poppers more methodicly they are usually a little less aggressive about coming off the beds to get them but if it is over top of them longer you have a better chance. Good Luck Happy New Year and Good Casting Roan z.
