Naples and Marco Island Fishing Report

A touch of the cold north wind and the fish are feeling it!

Posted March 18, 2007

Last weeks fishing was getting better up until Friday when a late season front blew thru. High winds and even worse high pressure has thrown things off for a couple of days. The good news is these fronts do not linger long and fishing should be improving again by Tuesday. Nice low low tides in the morning will be beneficial for the fly rodders among us. We should start having light winds again out of the East which is also good for the Fly.

For all you bait fisherman. The bait is still available around the head pin out of Marco. Bait around Naples has been hit and miss, best bet is to take the run to Marco, were a well placed cast with your net should get all you need in one throw. Tarpon are sporadically showing up off the beaches and in the back country. Jumped two on plugs on Friday, small ones. Jumped one 80Lb. on Fly early in the week. Not ready just yet. South of Marco seems to have more concentrations.

Snook are making there way to the beaches and the passes, start looking to the outside in for good action. Redfish are still available on the flats. They are much less concentrated going into Spring, so you have to look long and hard. Caught one on Friday for a first time Fly angler. He also caught his first Snook and his wife Jumped her first Tarpon on a plug and caught numerous Snook on plugs cast to the mangroves. It sounds like we killed them, but I thought for the amount of time it was just so so fishing, we fished very hard and almost had to force feed the fish to get them to take.

Reminder March 31st at Mackle park at 9am will be a Temple Fork Outfitter Day, were you can demo the rod line and get some advanced casting instruction from me. Hope all will come out. Being sponsored by Marco Fly Rodders, Anglers Answer, and TFO Rods. Good Casting Rz.
