What a crazy winter or lack of winter we are having so far. We thought a couple of weeks ago the winter type of fishing was going to start. Water temps were falling daily and our winter species were arriving by the droves. Back up again and bring out the top water baits the temps are rising again and the water temps are expected to continue to rise the rest of this month into December. If anyone could figure out the weather please let me know.
The next week should see some good fishing for Snook and Redfish in the backcountry. With the rising temps look for the Snook to want to continue to feed both on the outside and into the back country. I would expect the passes to heat up again from Naples to Marco and beyond. Lights fishing at night has been phenomenal this past week, and should continue thru to December. I believe you will be able to fish anywhere from the outside beaches all the way to the backs of the creeks and find Snook. Tarpon will be showing themselves again both inside and out. Water temps approaching 76 degrees again should have them up and about. I would expect to find them in the creeks, but wouldn’t be surprised to find them in some of the outside bait schools especially around the passes. We found them under the lights in Naples this past week and I would expect them to be in Marco as well.
The winter species are here as well, lots of ladyfish, Jacks, Trout, Pompano, Bluefish are showing and being caught on Sinking flies and Jigs tipped with shrimp. Outside of Marco River and Little Marco and Hurricane Pass are good places to start. Naples Bay along with some of the points in Rookery are holding these species as well.
I would also like to congratulate Kirstin Ambrose and her farther Wayne Ambrose. Fishing with me over the Holidays Kirstin caught and will be submitting a potential world record Snook on Fly on two pound class tippet. Unfortunately we were trying for a few 2 lb. class records but we were unable to land any that were big enough to eclipse the existing records. She did a wonderful job playing the fish out on light tippet, I have seen thread that was larger then 2 pound. Good luck and good fishing. Roan z.
