Naples and Marco Fishing Report February/March
Well, what can I say that everyone does not already know. The weather is just plain dismal. The fishing isn’t bad it just is not very typical for this time of the year. We are at the end of February and the beginning of March and it hasn’t warmed one little bit. Water temps are staying between 55 and 60 degrees and the fish are sitting on the bottom trying to survive. In between weather I was able to get out a few days in February and The Trout fishing was excellent along with the ladyfish. Catching anything else was a struggle. We were able to catch a few Reds in the Creeks on Jigs and Shrimp and even found a couple on Fly when I could talk one of my fly fisherman to actually fish. Lets hope it gets better soon. I always like the change to cold weather when it happens and you get to change your fishing style but this is getting a little ridiculous. Along with the Trout and Ladyfish we have found a few Pompano and even a couple of permit mixed in. They are getting more scattered and now not a surety by any stretch of the imagination. In fact the last two trips I did not have one on. I believe it will get better if that water temp ticks up into the mid 60’s.
What is March going to hold for us. Well we need a little prayer it is not starting well. The first week more rain and cold and the long range forecasting says below normal Cold weather. Lets hope they are wrong and lets get a warming trend going. The fish need help and if it doesn’t warm soon we may miss our Tarpon. If the water rises, March should be good fishing. The fish that need to feed like Snook and Redfish and some of the offshore fish should become ravenous and feed on everything. The trigger will be water temps in the 70’s, were they should be this time of the year. If things start to pop then start looking in the passes and near pass bays for Snook. There might be some Tarpon if we see 75 degree water, it will be interesting to see how long it is going to take to reach the magic mark. Like I said if doesn’t start happening soon Tarpon may be a bust this year. Bait fisherman are still going to be using shrimp for a while. There is some White bait out there, but few fish are feeding on them. Sheepshead fishing is still pretty strong. I have seen better though. I would expect good fishing for them to continue into and Through March. Everglades Bass Fishing still needs some higher water temps. We are catching a few but not as good as it should be. We need to see 65 to 70 degree temps there and then the bass will hit better. We are catching some on artificial worms dragged on the bottom but the popper fishing is still a little slow. Good luck and Good Fishing Roan z.
