OBAMA POLICIES AND THE MID-TERM ELECTIONS

No More Doubletalk by Victor Rios

A good friend of mine sent me a great e-mail, actually exposing and explaining why he, as well as a large cross-section of Americans are ready to guide our country back to the way our Founding Fathers envisioned it. .At age 76 he realizes that the American people, like him, have reached the tipping point and the 2010 elections are not about Democrats, or Republicans, or Independents, but about the future of our country as we know it and as our Founding Fathers expected it to be. He is concerned, like many of us, that his children and grandchildren and their fellow citizens are in jeopardy of totally loosing the foundation that has made America the greatest beacon of liberty and wealth creation the world has ever seen. It is this latter concern that compels me to share and incorporate some of his thoughts in this writing.

Everyone who follows politics knows that politicians of every stripe spin issues and orient and/or filter data for their own best interests, often without regard for the truth. Further, it is for me and should be for us all, painful to include in the same sentence the words President of the United States and liar. Sadly, today, the current President makes it impossible to avoid this and still even touch truth. With all ideology aside, and only relying on facts and expert analysis, I share the analysis below with you, focusing on healthcare, jobs, and the debt/deficit issues. I leave you to your own assessments as to whether our President has blatantly lied to us. I call it Doubletalk, but like my friend says we have actually been lied to.

Here are some of what President Obama said as a Presidential candidate and as a President:

1-Agreed to accept public financing, but after winning the Democrat nomination for President reneged and went on to raise over $600 million outspending McCain, by over a margin of 2 to 1. McCain, by the way committed to public financing and stuck to it.
2-All legislations under my administration will be televised live on C-SPAN. Ask yourself - How many back rooms deals took place to pass Obamacare, and was any of this shown on C-SPAN?
3-There will be “Real Bipartisanship” in my administration. It is widely known that Republicans were left out of all negotiations and all their proposals were either not considered or promptly dismissed by the likes of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid with President Obama’s support.
4-No Lobbyist will ever be allowed in my administration. Check the list of Obama staff members but how about Eric Holder, Obama’s Attorney General was registered to lobby until 2004 on behalf of clients including Global Crossing, a bankrupt telecommunications firm. He is probably the most prominent lobbyist in the Obama Administration.
5-No earmarks allowed from Congress. From the Stimulus to every other bill passed by the Democrat controlled Congress, earmarks and prok continues. It is business as usual.
6-Claimed that he never heard the so-called Reverend Jeremiah Wright say anything racist or against the US. Well Obama attendedt his church for 20 years, but maybe he was not paying attention to Wright’s sermons.
7-The US is not a Christian nation. The truth is that over 75% of Americans are Christians.
8-Obama said: “If you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world,” In actuality, the US ranks about 35th or 36th in the world with about 6 million Muslims, which represents about 2% of the total US population and about 0.6% of the Muslims in the world (estimated to be over 1 billion worldwide)
9-Approving the $800+ billion stimulus will keep unemployment under 8%. The truth is that it has been well over 9 % for the last 18 months.

1 Healthcare:

We were told by Obama and his Congressional Democrat majority (House and Senate) among other things, that the healthcare plan would bend the cost curve down, cover 32 million more Americans, never make a senior change doctors, or impact seniors’ care despite the ~ $500 billion dollar cut from Medicare, never require rationing as the so called “death panels” were an outright lie from the opponents of Obamacare,. The president also told us that 'If you like your present health insurance, you can keep it'. He also said that with the added new requirements, it would reduce the federal deficit. One’s common sense refutes that, and the numerical and other facts support yours, and mine, common sense.

Point#1 – Richard Foster, The Medicare chief actuary [the one person in charge of all Medicare numbers] testified as follows:
- Medicare payment rates for doctors and hospitals serving seniors will be cut by 30% over the next three years
- In the first full 10 years of implementation, total cuts for Medicare A and B will be $1.05 trillion, and in the first full 20 years $4.95 trillion (with these cuts what do you think will happen to seniors’ healthcare?).
- The new law also both provides for and mandates additional cuts by the Payment Advisory Board which can not now be quantified
- There were over 10 million seniors on Medicare Advantage [an HMO like option] and he estimated that over half will be forced to lose their plan as a result of the Obama funding plan – that means they lose both their current insurance and the doctor networks within their plan
- Two thirds of hospitals today lose money on Medicare payments and with the new cuts it is almost a certainty that many will shut down and or stop serving Medicare patients (the .Mayo family clinic in Glendale, northwest of Phoenix took such a step already this past summer) The CIGNA Insurance company recently reported that 92,000 senior in 27 states will lose some portions of their health care coverage and more is coming reductions are on the way that will affect many more people.

A recent Heritage Foundation study projects that 7.4 million of the 11.3 million enrollees in Medicare Advantage will lose their coverage as a result of Obamacare and that most of Obama’s Medicare Advantage cuts will hit those with income of less than $32,400 per year. (so much for “caring” for the people with the least financial means).

The Wall Street Journal reported that insurance carriers "plan to raise premiums for some Americans as a direct result" of ObamaCare,

Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius sent a threatening and coercive letter to Karen Ignani, President of America’s Health Insurance Plan (AHIP), who had exposed the problems with Obamacare, warning that “there will be zero tolerance for this type of misinformation” This is the kind of tactic seen in Castro’s Cuba, Hugo Chavez Venezuela, Stalin during his Soviet Union reign.amongst many other world present and past dictatorships.

As a result of this threat from Ms Sebelius. Congressmen Barton, Shimkus and Burgess' sent a letter to her states, in part: "As you may know, this is not the first attempt to silence critics of the new health care law. Soon after its passage, several companies disclosed cost increases on their balance sheets as required by the law’s changes. The Democratic Majority on the Committee on Energy and Commerce immediately questioned these cost increases and demanded documents as proof. When those documents proved not only that the disclosures were required by law and valid, but also that the companies were each debating whether it even made sense to maintain their health plans in the future, the investigation was quietly shut down."

The Washington Examiner reports: "Major employers like AT&T, Caterpillar, John Deere, and Verizon have already reported massive cost increases due to the new healthcare law."

The Associated Press is reporting that the cost of health insurance is already going through the roof: "Premiums may be out of reach. In many states, people in their 40s and 50s face monthly premiums ranging from $400 to $600 and higher."

The Associated Press also reports: "In states where the federal government runs the program directly, the insurance plan doesn't provide coverage for prescription drugs until people have met a $2,500 annual deductible. 'Applying this high ... deductible to the pharmacy benefit is a real barrier to consumer access to medications,'

And when Barack Obama said that you would be able to keep your current plan and your current doctor, he lied again.

Emily Miller with Human Events states: "Businesses will be forced to change their employees’ healthcare plans in order to meet the new regulations. An estimated 69% of businesses will be forced to change their plans, forcing countless millions of Americans to change plans and doctors." She goes on: "Anthem Blue Cross, Aetna Inc. and other insurance agencies are dropping child-only policies, citing huge, unexpected costs from ObamaCare. An estimated half a million children in the United States will be affected by the policies."

And when Barack Obama promised that everyone would have increased access to health insurance... well, the opposite is turning out to be true.
Point #2 – An independent study by one of the leading think tanks determined that health care premiums will rise in the near term by a minimum of 10 to 13% - it has never been refuted.

Point #3 – Of the 32 million with added coverage, ~ 17 million are planned to go on Medicaid – the States must fund a large % of Medicaid and thus the new healthcare law puts States in a terrible posture of huge unfunded mandates even as they are in huge deficit positions today.

Point #4 – Even the administration now acknowledges that about 60% of current insurance policies will disappear over time as a result of “Obamacare”. So much for Obama’s statement and promise “ If you like you current plan or your doctor, you will be able to keep it”.

Point #5 - despite all experts agreeing that medical costs are highly driven by litigation costs, “Obamacare”, as a payoff to the trial lawyers who support the Administration, legal or “tort” reform was never included in any part of the current law. Or worse yet, it was not even considered.

With all these facts and analysis coupled with the declared shortage of Doctors, how could anyone remotely conclude that this “Obamacare” will do anything but raise costs and the deficit; result in huge rationing and loss of service for seniors, require many seniors to be forced to new polices and new doctors, and also add bankruptcy like pressures to State budgets. All this on top of the huge wealth redistribution plan of forcing U.S. citizens to buy healthcare insurance even if they are young and healthy and do not want it or believe they need it, or be fined. Now, because of the many States that are suing on the constitutionally of forcing Americans to buy a product or commercial item whether they want it or not, in another game of doubletalk by the President and his Congressional lackeys they are trying to call this mandate a “special tax”. However, that is not what is on the bill, since Congressional Democrats who voted for the bill (read Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, and their majorities in the House and Senate) did not want to look like they were “raising” taxes.

Names are important, and of course there are no “death panels” in any law. However, if seniors are denied the care they need for a reasonable quality of life or to save their life, by either an advisory board based on cost benefit models or by inherent rationing due to these large Medicare funding reductions, fewer doctors and hospitals, you can bet it will look like a death panel to them at that time. Not any different than the UK National Healthcare System.

What is going on and the fact that President Obama and his team has resorted to demonization and threats to their opponents, brings to mind what President Thomas Jefferson once said; "When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny."

2 Jobs:
Clearly, the root issue today is about jobs. So many Americans are impacted by lack of full time employment that it is likely the key driver in all the problems we face. Consider the following points.

Point #1 – The President pushed through Congress a 2000 plus page, $800+ billion “Stimulus” law with no one having read it prior to voting. We were told that:
- unemployment, then at 7.7% would be held below 8%
- it would add over 3 million jobs, largely in the private sector and most “shovel ready” meaning a quick impact.
- The accounting would be tight as every dollar would be spent wisely.

Point #2 - The bill has grown to almost one trillion dollars.

Point #3 – The unemployment rate has gone from the 7.7% to as high as 10 and is now 9.6%. This means we have lost another 3 million jobs net even as total government employment has risen by at least 100,000..

Point #4 – A large part of the funding was directed to transfer payments to States which have zero impact on real job creation.

Point #5 – The government internet reporting on the Stmulus is saturated with hundreds of projects that have absolutely nothing to do with job creation and are direct paybacks to Ms. Pelosi’s, et all, and their friends, wasting billions of dollars and keeping American in the unemployment ranks.

Point #6 – Perhaps the most painful point of all. Economists use long agreed formulas for defining unemployment and full employment [full employment is interestingly defined as a 5% unemployment rate and the employment rate published by the Labor Dep’t includes only certain elements]. Normally this is not an issue. However, today, it is stated that there are about 15 million unemployed in a labor pool of slightly over 150 million which gives rise to the rate of about 10%. Sad news is that in the labor market today, there are about 8 million Americans working part time and/or at reduced wages on a non-volunteer basis and over 2 million who have looked so long without success that they have dropped out for now. Thus, today, and every politician and media pundit knows it, there are 25 million Americans who want full time employment and don’t have it. That means the real unemployment rate is about 17% [or one in every sixth American].

Point #7 – With full knowledge of all the above, The President goes on TV after a recent Department of Labor report and states that the Stimulus is a success and we are making progress just less than we hoped. He further states that we have created or saved jobs every month this year. Yet we are now in the 18th month with unemployment rate well over 9%. How cruel and distorted would a leader have to be to tell people struggling to keep their families warm,/dry/fed and safe that we are going in the right direction, just give us a little more time, knowing full well that their plight is likely to go on for a long time since his policies are not working? Furthermore, our economy is always adding and losing jobs, so the so-called number of jobs created is irrelevant, what is important is the net numbers of job gained and concurrent reduction in the unemployment rate, so the real story is that Obama’s ( as well as Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid’s Democrat allies) plan have not resulted in job creation. We continue stuck with an unemployment rate of between 9 and 10% with no end in sight.

Point #8 – While all this is upon us, the Obama administration, as a token for their extreme environmental left, limits drilling and even put a moratorium in the Gulf of Mexico against the recommendations of the scientists that Obama himself asked to analyze the issue (Presidential Doubletalk again?). This moratorium has caused a worse job impact for the people in that area than the BP goof itself. Talk about adding insult to injury., but leave it to President Obama and his Democrat Congress to continue their doubletalk and failed policies.

# 3 - The Deficit

There is no question that the current administration has taken us into a debt posture that already has devastating consequences. While American families at almost every level, in a common sense approach, reduce their spending profile to accommodate reduced income, the administration and Congress has ignored the issue at a national level, except to try and assure us it is a concern on their agenda and it is all “Bush’s fault”.

Point #1 – clearly the last administration went off the spending ranch in the last several years. It was simply a disgrace. But having said that go to the following points.

Point#2 – Obama likes to say that the day he arrived he had a $1.3 trillion dollar instant surprise and a $3 trillion short term problem. Not exactly the full picture. As I have read the picture, the last full Bush year deficit was something under $500 billion and the next year forecast was about $1.1 trillion [largely driven by TARP solution to the “liquidity” problem]. The next four years had a projected deficit of under $3 trillion. All of this pretty bad. However, in his first year in office, Obama raised the 1.1 trillion by around $350 billion to almost $1.5 trillion budget deficit, and nearly doubled the four year number to about $7 trillion . Not exactly addressing the problem; particularly since the costs of the healthcare and financial regulation are not fully included. Also, there is the “little” secret that Democrat Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi and Democrat Majority Leader Harry Reid do not want you to know. The Democrats took Congress in the 2006 Congressional election, so that they have been in control for the last 4 years and those of you who understand the US Constitution, Congress is the one that passes the budget. They are the ones that loaded these budgets with more and more unaffordable programs. You can blame Bush for not vetoing the 2007 and 2008 budgets, but Obama, instead of slowing down the uncontrollable spending, has kept on adding more to the deficit.

Point #3 – The ten year Obama deficit is stated as around $21 trillion, which is frightening enough but still does not include all his program costs, and there are estimates that even ignoring the unfunded mandates of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid could well exceed 30 trillion, with some economist talking about even worse than that number when all costs are finally defined. While all the numbers are clearly suspect due to lack of details, the following provides a pretty clear picture:

- The current and next fiscal year budget is based on borrowing (mostly from China) 40 cents of every dollar the federal government spends. Totally unheard of since WWII.
- The Obama budgets in the ten year planning cycle are currently estimated to exceed the sum of all deficits of every previous administration from President George Washington, to President George W Bush, and all big ticket items as a result of the recent new laws and unfunded mandates are not yet included.
- We can openly expect to hear a recommendation of a VAT (Value Added Tax), the stealth tax that taxpayers can not see or track but will noticeably raise the cost of almost everything we buy; i.e. it will look like inflation impacts to the buyers and hit the lowest earners the hardest which means more government subsidies to add more budget pressures.
- The picture is frighteningly clear – higher taxes, higher inflation, slower economic growth and the evaporation of the American dream we have for our children and grandchildren. We are being led to the old European model even as France, Germany and the UK rush to abandon it as they now have proof it has failed.

What do we need to do?

Election day is less than a month away. On Tuesday November 2, 2010, we need to take our country back to the principles and values that we inherited from our Founding Fathers. We need to send President Obama and his Democrat lackeys a strong message by voting against every Congressman and Senator who voted for Obamacare, who voted for a Stimulus program that has not created jobs, but saddled our children and grandchildren with trillions of dollars of debt and increased our dependence on China to lend us money (via the purchase of ever larger number of Treasury Bills).

I close this writing with:

Don't forget to update your calendar and Vote on Election day!. On November 2nd, THROW OUT THE TRASH!

God Bless America!
