Representation without Representation
by Theron Trimble

The September 2nd edition of the Naples Daily News featured a front page article on Connie Mack’s record of absences from his position in congress. The author, Jacob Carpenter, suggests that the absences, mostly involving votes on insignificant issues, were not a significant way to evaluate Representative Mack’s performance. What Mr. Carpenter fails to address is the fact that the real work of congress takes place in committee sessions where the prospective bills are developed and modified. If Representative Mack is absent for as many votes as indicated in the article, it is expected that his committee work is even more abominable. It should also be noted that his absence from congress is matched only by his absence from his home district,
For years Southwest Floridians, enamored with baseball and the name Connie Mack, have been willing to give up representation in congress by supporting a playboy dilettante as their representative. In the coming election they have a choice between continuing this tradition of non-representation by electing Trey Radel, a Mack clone to Mack’s seat and Mack to a position in the Senate or else actually gaining a voice in the House by voting for Jim Roach and continuing Bill Nelson in the Senate. The contrast is there in both races - principled, distinguished leadership by Roach and Nelson who have sacrificed for their country and clearly know the value of hard work versus Radel and Mack, who approach the elections with disdain for the electorate, a dismal history of moral and ethical practices, and very spotty records of meaningful employment.
The choice is there – more years of non-representation or representation by hardworking, informed individuals who really represent the typical working people of Southwest Florida, understand their needs, and will listen and speak out for them by actually showing up for work. Congressional representation by those who will actually know the people they represent better than they know California and the web porn sites.
Lets get real, Southwest Florida, and elect real representatives.
