Marco Island City Council elections: Living up to campaign promises?

Rush to Reason, by Dave Rush

So, lets go back to the last Marco Island City Council elections. Foremost in the campaign slogans was a promise of “fiscal responsibility”.

Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m happy to see two of the newly elected are living up to their campaign promises, by trying to hold the line on spending and taxes.

Apparently though, there are five councilmen who don’t know there is a recession, one of the worst on record, and certainly the worst one we’ve experienced as a city.

(We were not a city when the ’82 down slope economic ski ride took place.)

So one has to wonder where the now big 5 on the council have been hibernating. Could it be they don’t believe we have had big trouble economically for the past two years?

Could it be they don’t read the papers, or watch TV or listen to Radio news broadcasts, most of which discuss the recession incessantly?

Actually, it is none of the above. What we have here is a group of lawmakers who practice the current national policy of spend, spend, spend, never mind that we don’t have the money.

But wait, they are doing this because it is NOT their money they’re spending. It's OUR money, and the way they are getting it is by raising taxes. Would the argument be “because of the recession, our revenues are down because housing values are down, and we have to fill our budget with non crucial items, and who cares, as someone just said, it’s not our money, its THEIR money and they ought to pay for the privilege of living here”?.

When is the next election? Are our memories good enough to last until then? I think so.
