A Florida book store ... Mina Hemingway

The Savvy Shopper

I found the perfect gift in Mina Hemingway's book store. There were many books to choose from ... all about our wonderful state of Florida.

Some of the titles I found were, Florida History from the Highways, Key West and the Florida Keys, Naples 1940-1970's, In and Around Naples, Diving and Snorkling in the Florida Keys. I loved this one, One Tank Trips!! Who's not to love that with the price of gas now!!

Other interesting books: Six Mornings on Sanibel, The Book Lovers Guide to Florida, Life in the Everglades, or Bed, Breakfast and Bike Florida! I told you there is one for everybody on your list! There was also Naples Restaurant Guide and Florida Cook books. Randy Wayne Whites Gulf Coast Cookbook ( I didn't know he wrote a cook book!) It tells short stories has pictures of fishing and of course the recipes, $16.95. I got a cook book for my daughter.

She also carries some of Florida's famous authors, books by Carl Hiaasen. He was born and raised in Florida and has written 11 novels of which I have read most. I love to read about things happening right here! You can relate to that, it feels like you are walking right through his story!

I also found books by Robert N. Macomber, he lives in the quaint fishing village of Matlacha. And a large selection by Randy Wayne White, he describes Southwest Florida so well it's easy to smell the salt tang in the air and feel the gulf breeze!

There is a whole alcove of books by Ernest Hemingway, along with hats, T-shirts, and mugs. Ernest Hemingway, The Man, The Legend, The Journey!
Mina carries new books and best sellers. But there are shelves and shelves of used books. 20 percent are new books and 80 percent are used. Tons of used books are 50 percent off.

I was happy to find a section just for kids, with titles from our area like, Between the Tides, Please Mr. Crocodile, Crabs, Snails and Salty Tails, Over in The Ocean, and Ocean Atlas to name a few. They were all beautifully illustrated. Any little one would love one of these books. There was a small craft section for your little artist with paints, drawing paper, easel pad, stamp pads and brushes. Also puzzles and small toys. Children's story time for 8 and under is featured weekly. Call for times.

There will be a book signing by Linda Bildeau on Jan. 29 for her book Stepping in the Sea Grass.

Mina also carries major newspapers US and International. And German magazines.

A coffee bar serves cappuccino, expresso, coffee and some snacks.
The woman behind the register didn't ask if she could help me or ask what I was doing taking all these notes. I asked her on my way out. "Do you know how many books Ernest Hemingway wrote?" She said "I have no idea". I asked her what her name was, and guess what...it was MINA HEMINGWAY!!! I said, "You don't even know about the books your grandfather wrote!!" Go Figure!!
She works there every day.

What I know: Ernest Hemingway was the most influential writer of the last century. He won a noble prize for literature in 1954. Was born in 1899 and died in 1961. You can visit his home and museum, as I did, in Old Town Key West at 907 Whitehead St. the home of some 60 cats. A very interesting tour! The house, the history. My son was married there!

Back to Mina, her bookstore is located in the Up Town Shopping Center at 2700 Immokalee Rd. Unit 23, Naples. Phone 598-2220. Open 7 days a week. She might not know how many books her grandfather wrote but she has a lovely store.
