April showers bring May flowers ... well, not this year!
Posted May 11, 2007
We all know how badly we need rain, hopefully it will come soon! My impatiens are really getting leggy and need to be replaced. Your plants are probably in need of being spruced up too...so I drifted into Driftwood Nursery to talk to the plant experts as to what will stand up in all our summer heat.
Their plants are all healthy and beautiful with a wide variety of color. She suggested melampodium, nice green leaves with small yellow flowers at $1.19 a pot. Most of the plants were $1.19 for the 4 1/2" pots and 3.99 for the 6" pot. The marigolds were a bright yellow and orange to add a bright spot to your garden.
Pentas can withstand heat and sun and come in a variety of pinks to reds. Also suggested were periwinkle or vinca, crossandra, Mexican heather. Lantana is a perennial and very hearty. Sweet potato vine comes in three colors for use in a large bed.
Caladiums are 4-6" bulbs that bloom all summer, you leave them in the ground and they come back in the spring. They are green or red or a combo of both. The coleus come in a variety of pretty colors from bright green to burgundy, fuschia and orange.
The staff is very helpful and will help you select just the right ones. I also found glazed pots in every shape and size from $6.99-1000.00 Ceramic pots in every color from $3.99. Copper art work for your walls, weather-proof pictures to go outside.
There is a huge frog population in every size, gazing balls of every color, fountains galore, flocks of aluminum flamingos. A darling tin flamingo planter for $34.99 Butterflies are free---not really but they do have a good selection from butterfly houses to fluttering wonders...they actually flutter in your plants!!
I liked the Nerdy Birds for $29.99, crazy colorful birds to add color to your lanai.Wind chimes, hand blown glass hummingbird feeders starting at $14.99. The list goes on and on! So to get a lift for your garden, go visit Driftwood Nursery at 20071 S. Tamiami Trail in Estero.
