THIS WEEK IT IS ALL ABOUT GALLERIES....
Posted October 30, 2007
I had a great time going out to Pine Island this week for a change of pace. On the way back from Bokeelia we stopped at the artsy-fartsy galleries in Matlacha. They are all painted up like painted ladies in all colors and you find incredible finds in each one. I went into the Seaweed Gallery and found a host of all kinds of wonderful things! From local jams they claim is the best in a jar to hand made soaps! I loved, loved the black and white oils by Hambar. They were such simple subjects that just grabbed your eyes!
The artist Judy Jones was in the store when I was there, she creates incredible water colors. There were awesome Christmas cards that she painted but she said she usually doesn't do these but had surgery and had to think on a small scale. You would want to frame these if you received one in the mail!
There was a lot of pottery in all different designs, bowls, dip dishes all in neutral colors with what must be the artists signature, a magnolia blossom. They were fabulous! A large bowl was $46. and a small dip bowl only $48.
I saw hand painted benches and chairs that were screaming FLORIDA!!
Hand painted wine glasses...a great gift from our area. Decorated mirrors, tee shirts, notes from Nancy Wilson that were Florida scenes and birds.
A limited edition of North Captiva Fish House was $35.00.
Unusual jewelry. Mermaids, mermaids and more mermaids! Glass mermaids for the tree $9.95 and manatees for the tree $4.75.
A lot of beaded things that were really cute like lizards and frogs!
Cleaver cheese boards in ceramic with the cheese knife would make a good gift. Unusual soap dishes with beading and wire were $21.95.
How about 3-D post cards that they mail in various shapes, flamingo and crab for $10. Or the coconuts....yes! Real coconuts that are painted up with your message....they really go through the mail..at $22.95. Or a real flip-flop with your message through the mail for only $6.65! Wouldn't your Northern friends love to get one of those? Come on down!!
There is some wonderful pit fired stoneware that had handles of Philodendron sheaths by Lynn Russell. The one I liked was $75. Very different!
Or for the FUN PARTY GUY! Light up beer mugs for $8.95. There was a wide variety of all kinds of artsy things that kept you there for a spell. This shop used to be owned by Leoma Lovegrove and was sold to Seaweed Gallery ... But they are moving just down the street and Leoma is coming back!! That is a whole new column!! More to Come!!!
Seaweed Gallery is located at 4643 Pine Island Avenue, Matlache, Florida. Phone 283-3328
