The Shell Factory ... more than shells

Posted May 6, 2008

I just returned home from a trip to visit my mom, while I was waiting for my plane I wandered into the Shell Factory on concourse C at our airport. Now you can't get to this shop unless you are traveling because it is past security but it is a birds eye view of what you can find at the BIG Shell Factory in North Fort Myers.

The first thing that caught my eye was a beautiful line of silk capris and blouses by Pineapple Moon in yummy colors. The Capri's were $79.99, blouses $89.99 and there were matching light weight sweaters. A perfect outfit for travel to almost anywhere! There was a selection of straw totes for $20. Tropical theme Tee shirts $24.99.

I found a lot of different sized mermaids that were adorable from $40. Huge sand dollars $55. And a head decorated with shells, perfect for a silk fern, maybe on the patio table, $60.

They carry Glass Menagerie by Fitz and Floyd. There was a selection of many things in a festive parrot theme, party glasses $11.99, spoon holders and cookie jars, even picture frames. Cute kissing fish salt and pepper shakers that had magnets attached to their mouths. They came in a wide variety of colors, $19.99. There were other ceramic fish in all color combinations at $29.99. Another section featured all kinds of items with a palm tree theme, other shelves held gator items.

You will find all kinds of souvenirs from post cards, tons of shells and sharks teeth that the grand children love! I liked the coconuts that were brightly painted heads of fish, pirates or frogs for $9.99. Cute!

There were sparkly under-the-sea Christmas ornaments and beach beauties from $16.99-19.99. Beach cover-ups, wooden key fobs in a nautical theme $3.99. Candles decorated with shells and jars with sand and shells inside from $2.99-19.99.

This little store was packed with all kinds of things ... you won't believe what the BIG store holds!! Fine jewelry for Mom and novelty jewelry that kids love, turtle and fish wind chimes. Coconut patties also in key lime, pina colada, orange and almond. The little kids shopping were going nuts over the Florida Gator Droppings packaged in small bags (chocolate covered peanuts!) or the Sanibel Flamingo Poop! (pink covered sunflower seeds!) and the Fort Myers Seagull Poop (huckleberry jelly beans!). All were $7.99, as well as the packaged chocolate sea shells.

In front of the store was a pirate chest filled with candy gold rocks or coco rhumbies. Pirate head banks or treasure chest banks, flags and pirate tee shirts..Arrr!

At the check out find tiny turtles made of shells with teeny-tiny straw hats and glasses on $1.99. Interesting little shop on Concourse C, phone 768-7169.

Visit the big Shell Factory at 2787 N. Tamiami Trail in North Ft. Myers. Phone: 995-2141.

You won't believe the treasures you will find here! It's huge so plan on spending some time.

Happy hunting!
