Dear Fellow American,
"Danger and delight grow on one stalk."
The beauty and strength of our wondrous country is in its diversity of culture and people. In finding the catalyst to tie it all together, we find the solution to our problems. The Scottish Proverb hints at this very truth and the danger that befalls us if we fail in our quest. Danger and Delight grow on one stalk translated means Failure and Success are joined at the hip in our one great country. We must find within ourselves the ability to overcome and find solutions that are not always vertical but can be found laterally.
We as a country have to learn to move beyond “positions” and take the time to understand what is behind the “position”. What are the hopes and fears of this position? Listen and learn about each other and we can find a path forward.
Our founding fathers wrestled similarly when determining whether or not to declare independence. Representatives from the colonies wrestled and engaged in pitch arguments over parting ways from our mother country England into an unknown world full of dangers and chaos with a half hearted support at times both domestically and abroad. We had peoples from many nations speaking German, French, Dutch, English and Native American populations as well. What they accomplished in a very strained, fearful environment putting all of their wealth, homes and families at risk was nothing less than miraculous. Delegates from the colonies scurried into and out of Philadelphia the summer of 1776 signing off on the Declaration of Independence inking into history for all time the greatest feat and sealing their fate - either Danger or Delight, Success or Failure. There was no middle ground. Give me Freedom or Give me Death.
So we find ourselves in a similar situation in today’s world: Nuclear Proliferation, Terrorism – Al Qaida, dissolution of alliances, dangers anew, health care, economic and financial crises and changing demographics. We must find that common thread to tie us together vs. letting ourselves be torn asunder. Engage your fellow countrymen in conversations, dialogues and debates. Let us open up the town hall, state forums and national stage to corporately find our solutions….together. United we stand, Divided we fall both on the same stalk.
