I have seen our community grow from a relatively intimate vacation and retirement community to a more metropolitan center for southwest Florida. Thirty years ago, all of Collier County had only about 50,000 permanent residents. Today we are pushing 450,000, although the growth has slowed considerably. Up until my retirement from Collier County government about six years ago I was the County’s Transportation Operations Director. I hope to be able to provide readers with answers to some of the issues that get headlines.

Sometimes I wonder what people are thinking…or not…when they are trying to cross a road or walk along a street or highway.

Which just proves that I am not only infallible, but that I am occasionally hard-headed as well (just ask my wife…).

Contrary to what some believe, women are safer drivers, overall, than men. The insurance companies, who have their money where their mouth is, agree that women are better risks than men.

What about those large overhead signs that have recently been erected along I-75? Are they useful or are they just another tax-eating frill?
Would you rather pay by the gallon or by the mile?

There is a growing interest in whether it is more equitable to tax by the mile rather than by the gallon. The thought is that it will raise more cash to charge motorists a “gas tax” by the mile rather than, or perhaps in addition to, by the gallon as is the current practice.
Why "Right Turn On Red" in the first place? Should we abolish it?

Where did this notion of permitting vehicles to move on a red light come from? Should we go back to the way it was before we had uniform traffic controls? Those who think we are too strict in our regulations of traffic should consider the law of unintended consequences...

Safety: another victim of the recession?

Does anyone at any level of government really care about safety? Red light cameras are the current "hot button", but what about some of the other issues that are still under the radar that put us in danger every day ?
