Computer models have been advertising the cool down for SW Florida for the start of the new year for several days now. And as a major storm develops off the New England coast on New Year's Day and a large arctic high positions itself over Minnesota, cold air from Canada will be funneled into our region. While forecasts will be adjusted as new data becomes available, the current thinking by the National Weather Service (as of sunrise, December 31, 2009) projects a low of about 41 degrees on the morning of January 4; the record low for Naples for that day is 39 degrees (2002).
Although no freeze is expected at this time, local areas inland should be prepared for temperatures to drop to near freezing at some time during this cold spell.
