The Kentucky Derby

Weather For Everyone

Starting today, we will be looking forward to the “Run for the Roses” on Interactive Weather, because on occasion, weather will actually have an impact on the results of a sporting event.

This doesn’t happen as much in team sports, because both teams deal with the same weather.

Remember about 5 years ago when Tiger Woods chances were dashed in the British Open thanks to that horrible monsoon he had to play through, while others were safely in the clubhouse, or had yet to tee off? Safe to say weather changed that tournament.

Historically, the Triple Crown races have been impacted somewhat because of weather,....at least that's what many think, because last time I checked they never actually got a horse to comment on the condition of the track.

Perhaps you remember the lyrics to the song at the beginning of Guys and Dolls, “I got the horse right here, the name is Paul Revere, and heres’s a guy that says if the weather’s clear, can do,......” If you haven’t heard it, I will be very happy to sing it for you this week on Interactive Weather, but those lyrics also suggest that weather is a factor.

Well, if it does rain Saturday for the Kentucky Derby, there is a horse that some experts think could win, and he’s a great story himself. His name is Smooth Air, and he’s trained by 70 year old Benny Stutts, who has a Derby horse for the first time. His jockey, Manoel Cruz, is also in his first derby. Many experts say that this is a horse that runs well when the track is wet.

Does the weather really affect the way a horse will run on the track? My wife Samantha has been around animals all her life, and is on the board of the Lee County Animal Services Trust Fund, and she made a great comparison.

You see, we have a dog, Scarlet, who is not happy at all if she has to go outside and the grass is wet, or if it’s raining. She will stop cold, and then proceed very gingerly, and stay in the lawn only long enough to “do her business.” Safe to say some horses feel the same way.

As of this writing, there is a chance for some rain in the forecast at Churchill Downs both Friday and Saturday, and we’ll continue to update daily.

See you every weekday for Interactive Weather.
