Several of their name appeared in the documentation of application of the charter school to the Board of Education as volunteers.

On the application form under 14. Marco Island Academy List of Volunteers are the following names. Joe Batte, Chuck Keister, Frank Recker and planning board member Irv Povlow (excuse my error Pavlow is not on the Council but potentially plays a significant part in the councils decision making process.

In order to be fair, shortly after the application was made available to the public a couple of the councilors denied that they were volunteers. That would bring to question the validity of the application itself.

You can get a complete copy of the application from the Collier County Board of Education as it is public information.

herzilli and klaub whether they are one-in-the-same or two separate peas-in a pod, makes no nevermind - they are terribly annoying - most of the time they do not make much sense... give it a rest already.

I understand that Adult Education has an English grammar class open to the public... this would help both grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary and composition???

Let's also be realistic, you don't get into college on academics alone. There has to be some community involvement and after school participation. Colleges like to see well rounded individuals.

Herzy or Klaub - for your I just want to help you out with your English: Heed the rules below when using Never mind or nevermind?

The word “nevermind” is often used in error for the two-word term “never mind.” "Nevermind" Is an old-fashioned noun meaning attention or notice, used in the negative sense:

Pay no nevermind to that man behind the curtain.

The phrase “never mind” is a two-word imperative meaning “please disregard” or “pay no attention to that.” This is the version you'll use most often in your life.

Never mind that man behind the curtain.

You should avoid using the single word nevermind altogether if you are confused by this! Is that explanation all right?

By doing that the Academy would be supporting alchemy, turning a Klabautermann into a Herzili.

But then again, many of their unsubstantiated claims appear to be doing just that same thing.

LVG, You are so right - as is Islandeye - some people can dish it out, but sure can't take it when it comes back around.

So, did we all learn the difference between NEVER MIND and NEVERMIND today?

Maybe tomorrow we can work on some ENGLISH grammar - for example, what is wrong with this sentence (taken as a direct quote from an earlier blog): "Did you ever consider to take professional help?

If we can all come together, perhaps as a blogging community, we can share some 3rd grade grammar tidbits with one of the two most annoying posters to date? Lets make it a challenge. Any takers?

It just takes awhile to get all the preliminary items done.

PLEASE spread the word and keep us informed about the petition!!
I have several children who have gone to Lely and graduated with VERY admirable academic resumes. As well, they are well adjusted, successful people who are doing much for their communities. This entire MIA thing is based on race. A group of people began this movement because they want to remain separtists.
There are many parents who understand that Lely has EVERYTHING and more that MIA is claiming they WILL have. Its totally unfounded, and I can't believe so many parents would actually consider themselves intelligent when they themselves have never visited LHS, seen for themselves, or weighed the facts!! What kind of math or science is that?? (Sounds like fear and ignorance.)
I DARE one of you to respond with some sort of substance because I know you have not checked the facts for yourself.
TELL ME WHEN & WHERE I CAN SIGN A PETITION!!! The paper isnt telling the whole story-there are more against this than for!!

Thank you Marco Eagle for the indepth article on the Thursday's MIA open-house held at the MICMS. Thanks for the quotes, many photographs, the introduction of the princiapal and what MIA has offer the incoming students.

My question is:WHERE IS THE INDEPTH ARTICLE ON LAST TUESDAY'S (Jan.25) LELY HIGH SCHOOL'S OPEN HOUSE HELD AT THE MICMS?

No quotes, no photographs and no mention that Principal Fairbanks, Assitant Prinicpal Ricciardeli and Teacher Jennifer Gaddis gave a presentation on what LELY HS has to offer incoming students.

"Lely High School Principal Ken Fairbanks talks to a group of parents and students Tuesday evening at Marco Island Charter Middle School. The orientation evening highlighted the school's academic, sports and extra-mural activities." (Quentin Roux/marcoislandflorida.com)Sun Times 1/27/11

School Representatives will make a follow-up visit in April....perhaps the Eagle will be impartial and report the forthcoming visit as enthusiastically as it did the MIA visit.

WHAT a point Granny Schmidt makes. Perhaps the Eagle is really doing a favor to those of us who have a brain!! MIA is a wish of parents who are scared to send their children away from an unrealistic, bubble of an island. This academy is hearsay and cannot be validated, no matter the supporters who gather to convince themselves.

I fail to see how a group of parents attempting to establish a place to educate their children can be harmful to Marco Island. Your opinion that varsity sports are an important part of education, fails to account for the 80 percent of our student bodies that do not benefit from this activiity. Every boy in Ameica does not have the opportunity to become an NFL star, that's reserved for the gifted. What promises do varsity sports offer our young women? Equal pay? Although women's basketball is popular, none of their talent has any hope of earning the salaries the NBA offers. Why not give the 80 percent a chance to use their time to gain an education and excell at life. Public education has been exposed as a failing money pit. Give the Academy a chance, it may prove to be an effective avenue to success for our children. Our children deserve a chance. Help give our hometown it's own school. This is a good story and your negativity is starting to sound redundent. Is there nothing you would champion?

If public education is a failing money pit, why is MIA going to accept public funds?

Parents of students on this island should take the time to talk to educators not affiliated with the MIMS or LELY or the few that are connected to the Academy. You should probably talk to educators from other States if you can or ask friends or relatives to do the same. Know what you may be getting yourself and your child into.

Take some time and get a real picture of what is really going to be available to you. Talk to people who are or were educators and do not have a vested interest in a plan that has too many questions that have not been answered.

You want the best for your kids as any good parent does. Whatever the outcome you will know that you gave every effort to find out the truth so that you can make an informed decision.

Take the time and really know that you have done all the possible research and not assume anything.

The best to you and your family.

MIA = FLUFF What child would CHOOSE to go to this school??? None that have been surveyed - sadly, their parents will push and shove and denigrate their entire high school experience...

I spose next Marco Island will need a small college/university to complete their bubbled life - just think, born, raised, and never ever need to leave the island!

There is by no doubt, in my opinion, that there exists a definite conflict of interest regarding Tract K disposition by 3 of our City Council members. The most "gentlemanly" thing to do by any of these 3 who appear on the Academy List of Volunteers is to recuse themselve from voting on this issue regarding Tract K.

The only vote they should have, personally, on this issue is in a long called for, needed referendum.

What they do on their own time is up to them but as a City Council member they should be representing their whole constituancy and not a point of view by a splinter group on this island.

Who are they representing if they were voted in by the majority and only vote for a small self interest group? Definitely not the people who supported them in the past election.

If you had a half of a brain you would explode! Stop turning opinions so it looks like you have something significant to say.

Nobody called for censorship of the press when it was called for the press to publish all the information and not leaving out a significant part because it was not in the writer's best interest. It is still going on if you bother to read Ms. Ferrara's other story.

The power of choice and competition is an American axiom. We need that to progress in this world, where the US is currently ranked 25 of 30 industrialized nations in core subject matter like Math and Reading. That's unacceptable! Can you possibly disagree?!
