The country was founded on a principal of limited government during a time when our entire population was smaller then New York City or LA. The country also didn't require a million man Army or a massive two ocean Navy. Nor did it anticipate having to pay for a massive space program, world wide communication systems, intelligence capable of knowing everything we and our enemies are thinking, medical care for 30 million people who have no money or incarcerate more than 10 per cent of our population. A society that is unwilling to care for their own parents when they get old and sick not to mention the costs involved today. And don't forget all the police and fire departments we require to protect ourselves from an immoral society and ourselves, or a society that cares only about the individual member that has moneny to support themselves. Add to that 14 million illegals that both Republican and Democrats refuse to send home, a border the Constitution says must be protected, but no party sees that as a priority and maybe, just maybe you can see why a government the size of the one George Washington presided over just won't do. You people need to take another look at the rescources you use when looking at history or for that matter reality. Also, while debating the need for a Department of Education let's fix a small problem in that area. Has it occurred to any of you that the public education system is designed to keep our population dumb so the politicians can promote these ignorant populist statements. Maybe what you seek is a government small enough to make it unnessary and irrelavent? Like having no country at all? Tell me, where is that permitted in the Constitution. Last time I checked our country's very existance was the purpose of the Constitution. But then what do I know, I'm one of you and I too want less government intrusion and I too don't want to pay taxes. But I do want Social Security and Medicare and the freedom to be left alone. Americans have so many contradictions to deal with.
