A previous Naples Daily News on-line article disclosed the intent of our local government to charge a 5.8% electric utility bill increase as of July 1 to finance the funding for Jackson Labs to come here. I oppose the use of taxpayer dollars to fund an out of state genetics research company with limited prospects of an economic diversification impact on our community. New employment would be limited to relocation of microbiologists with advanced degrees or other scientists with research experience with lab mice, with minimum employment opportunities for our local community and with considerable expense to the state and local tax payer. We need to challenge the local and state political support of this risky venture versus supporting established local businesses with proven history of contributing to the local economy as major employers, supporters of many local charities and contributors to medicine, without local or state funding, with outstanding growth and employment prospects for the future.
