This is why the Founding Fathers, including George Washington, made ANY reference to religion at all.
Since over 95% of the world's population is superstitious, emperors and politicians from Constantine to George Bush have nearly always used religion as a tool to gain the support of the masses. (Even Joseph Stalin eventually did it during the German invasion by reopening the churches)
It was therefore important for the Founding Fathers to appear as if they were doing GOD'S WORK in laying the groundwork for the American Revolution. Hence the phrase: “Endowed By Their Creator".
(notice it that it DIDN'T read endowed by the god of Jehovah, or endowed by Jesus Christ)
But the F.F. didn't believe it. The phrase was just an tool used to gain the support of the ignorant masses in support of the American revolution; god being on the side of the Colonists; not the king; so the colonists MUST be justified in the fight for freedom.
God plus country results in a more powerful army AND unity.
Men like Benjamin Franklin lived part of their lives during a time when European men, women and children screamed themselves to death over slow fires because of the common man’s superstitious belief in demonic possession.
It was well known then and even today that this practice followed us to the New World with the chocking deaths of New England women sacrificed in the name of the Christian god.
The very last thing the Founding Fathers wanted was to carry this or any other Medieval Christian baggage into the new government of the Enlightenment.
Devils, demons, demonic possession, angels and spirits were OUT. REASON was IN.
Yet the F.F. still had to tread lightly in the area of religion for fear of alienating the superstitious masses; so they supplied just enough “god talk” to wet the appetites of the faithful, in order to secure their support.
The F.F. knew that no ghost spoke to a nomadic Jew; no man-god rose from the dead; and no angel appeared to a Arab.
The also knew that no ENLIGHTENED Government could exist for the benefit of CIVIL RIGHTS if it revolved around such superstitious rubbish; as most of the European Governments did at that time. So the F.F. sprinkled a little god here, and a little god there; just enough to convince the average peasant that GOD was on the side of The Revolution and not England, in order to provide UNITY; that powerful force of NATIONALISM + FAITH.
-But to the F.F. and to Charlemagne and Constantine before them; religion was just a TOOL to manipulate the peasants; and on and on it goes today as the politician who says "god bless America" garnishes more votes then one who doesn't.
That's why the Dec of Independence says We hold these truths to be "self evident" and not we hold these truths to be “SACRED“.
That's why there is no mention of Jesus Christ in the original documents by these so-called CHRISTIAN Founding Fathers.
