Seems like a very inefficient waste of time and money for the police. Instead of "Safety Checks," maybe they ought to go out and actually stop or solve dangerous violent crimes.
If you took those same seven cops that they need to man the checkpoints and let them each drive around the county in their cars, they would have a much more visible deterrent then if they just hang out in a parking lot for a few hours. People drive more safely when they see a police car in traffic. Plus, this way they wouldn't be accused (or even have the appearance)of ethnic profiling - just bad drivers - and they would also be a presence that would deter other types of crimes.
