Friedrich Wilhelm, Baron von Steuben was born in Magdeburg, Germany on September 17, 1730. In 1777, Steuben, a former captain in the Prussian army, presented himself to George Washington as a Prussian general and volunteered to train the Continental Army. He arrived at Valley Forge in February 1778, shared the camp's hardships, and began drilling Washington's near-starved and often-defeated troops.
He trained them to follow a simplified manual of arms. By the Spring of 1778 he had converted the previously undisciplined Americans into a highly skilled fighting force, well able to hold their own against the British Regulars at the Battle of Monmouth. Steuben was commissioned as a major general in the Continental Army and settled permanently in the United States.
After the war, he settled near Utica, New York and died on November 28, 1794.
I am wondering ajm3s that YOU have this leak in US history. Without General Steuben Washington will never beat the British. Remember:
"...Steuben had converted the previously undisciplined Americans into a highly skilled fighting force, well able to hold their own against the British Regulars at the Battle of Monmouth....."
I like your other statement better:
"With regard to 4th of July fundraising, I would like to see 100% funding through true citizen support and not support through tax revenue."
I am agree. Why did we need taxpayers money. Keith and his troopers did a great job. I guess Eddi spend no 1 cent for this event. However - we will have a firework next year too. So or SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent detail, and von Steuben was a great adopted patriot amongst many, including Lafayette!
Let us toast the many great foreign contributors that aided the revolutionaries in the fight for independence from England.
I only hope Americans can claim independence from the "nanny" state being promoted by the current administration and liberal leaning legislatures.
I had to add the last comment, just to stir the "pot". Imagine, the federal government is now promoting the expansion of the food stamp program for the betterment of one's health. Yet here is view at the cashier's register:
