The quotes in this article by city members is now really scaring the hell out of me.
This one is just a beauty, I had to read it three times for it to really sink in:
"Hunter told the City Council that adding the officers might paradoxically contribute to an increase in the local crime rate, as crimes are brought to light and prosecuted, rather than going undetected."
Now ask yourself, I though most crime was reported by victims or witnesses of crimes. So based on this comment by Mr. Hunter, we will now have undetected crime reports.
Did I miss something? This statement just feeds my slant that government will pretty much say anything to justify its expansion.
Now, we have a local police force to which we pay $____ and we have county force which we pay $____. Yet we have the same staffing "on the street", but I believe we are paying a lot more today, even considering inflation.
And I would like to actually applaud the citizens of Marco Island for acting rationally and without alarm. And for a metric, we can review the calls for assistance.
I would have been more impressed with proportional manpower given the westerly movement (away from Florida) of the storm as it moved north. But then again, hype to increase staffing to justify overtime or comp time.
Geez, been there did that, now if only the folks can be lead to believe that more crime will be reported if we have more officers.
Very well said, thank you.
