Thus, they plucked up Petraeus -- who had punched the right Pentagon tickets and written some conventional wisdom strategy books -- puffed him up like a dirigible, then sent him off to do some Surging, first in Iraq, then Afghanistan.

Quickly, the political class declared these surges a Napoleonic master stroke. Then our general could be further inflated, so he-man Biden & the great OBAMA could get their pictures taken next to all those shiny medals.

Nobody bothered to check that this pliable general was more than a trifle thick, as well as a jerk....
