MRZ333, You are so, so very wrong. NO responsible gun owner has ever or will ever think their weapon is a toy. I was taught to shoot by my farther. His lesson number one which I will never forget even today was this weapon is not a toy, this weapon can and will kill someone. Michael is spot on with his assumption that the problem is with the mentally ill, not the weapon. More people are killed by knives, clubs and bats annually than by assault “weapons” by a 4 to 1 ratio. Do you think we should ban all knives, clubs and baseball bats, no. The mental health industry does need to be more proactive in identifying these people.
But assault weapons account for a higher share of murders of police officers and mass public shootings than knives, clubs, and baseball bats.
As Ronald Reagan said, "I do not believe in taking away the right of the citizen for sporting, or hunting, and so forth, or for home defense. But I do believe that an AK-47, a machine gun, is not a sporting weapon or needed for defense of the home."
