When the Mackle Park Community Center opened in the 1980s the Island had 6,000 residents and the park had a limited number of programs. As the existing Mackle Park Community Center continues to age and maintenance costs continue to rise, more and more events compete for the limited space the building and airnasium have to offer. Before I throw in my two cents, let me make a couple of things clear: I have no problem with the current plan; and I’m not against Marco Island getting a high school. In fact, I think Collier County should consider a performing arts high school for the island — one that could attract students from all over.
