The Christmas Island Style series of events are completely self-funding and depend upon no monies from the City of Marco. That has not always been the case, as the city use to provide a grant of $15,000 to help fund the annual activities. Previous to that a grant was given by Florida Water Services which use to fund the events through a similar grant prior to being acquired by the city some years ago. Of course, the tournament is all about raising funds for the charitable work of the MPF. But winning golfers can get some funds back. Foundation board member Curt Koon said that, in the eighth year of the tournament, the decision was made to offer winners the gift that fits everyone. “Instead of a trophy that clutters up your mantel, we’re giving cash prizes,” he said. The chance to win that cash will come on Saturday, September 24, when the 4-player best ball scramble will tee off at the Island Country Club on Nassau Court.
