Late Tuesday night, the Marco Eagle learned he was stepping out of the race for council.
The vote on Nov. 6 will decide four seats for City Council. Meyers was one of nine candidates seeking election.
In his statement sent via e-mail, Meyer likened Marco Island to Charles Dickens’ 1859 work, “A Tale of Two Cities.” He suggested his optimistic view of the island was shattered by the divisiveness he encountered as a candidate.

The millage rate charged to island taxpayers will not rise above last year, even if voters approve an on-island emergency services clinic. And seawall repair may get more expensive. &gt;These were some of the items that came out of the Marco Island City Council&amp;#39;s July 16 meeting, the regular session after the joint workshop with the Planning Board, and the closed door executive sessions on legal matters. The council&amp;#39;s meeting drew an overflow crowd to the building, with additional seats set up in the lobby for members of the public to watch the proceedings on television monitors.

The meeting opened with a brief opening statement by Riviere, in which he assured the audience that the discussion was only preliminary, and there would be no immediate shift of Marco Island&amp;#39;s building inspectors to the Collier County staff.

</title><link>http://www.marconews.com/news/2011/sep/17/marco-island-city-council-tax-rate-budget/?partner=RSS</link><description>Settling on a final tax rate appears to be a taxing proposition for the Marco Island City Council, as several options remain on the table for Monday’s final budget hearing. Despite some difficulty in agreeing on the best approach, council members already have looked to eliminate a proposed 6 percent utility rate increase and are considering eliminating a long-standing 6 percent utility surcharge.

</title><link>http://www.marconews.com/news/2011/sep/08/closing-number-marco-island-city-council-holds-las/?partner=RSS</link><description>Government is about making rules, and also about following rules. The Marco Island City Council was constrained by Florida statutes at their meeting Wednesday, as they wrestled with adopting a budget for the upcoming fiscal year, FY 2012, and determining the millage rate of the taxes that will have to pay for it.
The City Council must adopt a final millage rate at their next meeting, set for Sept. 19, and once they set a millage rate for the year, they can lower it, but cannot raise it. There are numerous ways to work with, and even get around rules, though, and the council took advantage of some of those Wednesday evening.

All summer, the Marco Island City Council Budget Sub-Committee has been meeting at City Hall, going over the budget line by line, department by department, and dollar by dollar.
Friday, committee chairman Larry Magel, and Councilmen Bill Trotter and Wayne Waldack met once again with city staffers. The Budget Sub-Committee will make recommendations to the entire City Council on a proposed total budget and how to get there, and a lot of numbers have to be crunched in the process.

In just a matter of weeks, the city’s planning board will roll out sections of the plan on the city’s website using a software program created by the University of Central Florida. Planning board officials in Charlotte County donated the program to Marco Island at no cost. Councilman Wayne Waldack urged the city to investigate the idea after seeing a demonstration at a statewide conference for city leaders.
