Senior Managing Editor Eric Strachan has been with the Naples Daily News since 1981, when he started as a staff photographer (he claims he was 12 at the time). The paper was a six-day-a-week afternoon publication and for awhile he was the only staff photographer. And that's how he got into management.

As Naples and Southwest Florida grew, Strachan helped to build and direct the photography staff at the Daily News — gaining a national reputation for its photojournalism and picture usage. The Daily News has been recognized several times in the past 13 years for Editing, Best Use of Pictures in the Pictures of the Year International contest, as well as Best Use of Photography in the Best of Photojournalism competition, sponsored by the National Press Photographers Association. See the paper's most recent wins in POYi for Newspaper Picture Editing at

As a photographer, Strachan garnered numerous awards in the National Press Photographers Association, Florida Press Club and the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors. He was named director of photography at the Daily News in 1991, and later assistant managing editor, where he supervised the presentation and design of the paper as well as the editorial photography and graphic art departments. He was named Designer of the Year for Scripps Howard newspapers for his page design work in 1998, 2000 and again in 2002, the last win "retiring" him from the contest and placing him in the Scripps "Hall of Fame."

Strachan led the editorial portion of the newspaper's redesigns in 2001 and 2009, and in 2004 he was part of the newspaper's team that produced the "Deep Trouble: Gulf in Peril" series which won the Meeman environmental award shared by the Washington Post, and the Florida Society of Newspaper Editor's Gold Medal award.

He has served on the faculty of the Stan Kalish Picture Editing Workshop for nine years and has also served on the picture-editing faculty of the Mountain Photography Workshops sponsored by Western Kentucky University. He has also served as a judge for the editing portion of the Best of Photojournalism competition, for the American Society of Newspaper Editors photography competition and for the Wedding Photojournalist Association.

Strachan became managing editor in 2007, overseeing the print publication. He was named senior managing editor in 2008 and supervises daily editorial operations under Editor Phil Lewis.

A longtime Florida resident, he's originally from Ohio and lived in New Orleans before settling in Florida in 1976. The son of a jazz musician, he's an accomplished acoustic guitarist and also enjoys boating, fishing and scuba diving.
