Nomad with a note pad. That pretty much sums it up for this reporter.

Tara had always expressed herself through written word – songs, poetry, journals, short stories. But an internship at WGCU in 2004 kicked off a five-year trip around the world learning the business of storytelling.

After a taste of public radio, Tara jumped into a challenging and rewarding graduate program at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. There she wrote for several Chicago newspapers covering everything from banks to the environment. She also covered the U.S. Congress for a North Carolina newspaper during a semester in Medill’s Washington D.C. bureau.

In 2006, she interrupted her graduate studies for a six-month world tour.

She spent three months in Brussels, Belgium where she wrote for the European Voice, an Economist-owned weekly newspaper covering the European Union. During that time, a special assignment took her to Yerevan, Armenia and Auckland, New Zealand to cover issues facing the Armenian Diaspora.

Then it was off to London where she covered U.K. stock markets for Bloomberg News. She covered the roller coaster ride the markets took after a terrorist plot was uncovered to blow up planes over the Atlantic Ocean.

After graduation, Tara headed west to California ’s Central Valley where she covered Kern County ’s 47 school districts at The Bakersfield Californian, a family-owned newspaper.

But her adopted home-town of Naples called with an opportunity to report for the Daily News and in August, 2008 she packed up her Escort and drove 2,500 miles back to the Gulf coast. Tara now covers small business and Bonita Springs city government.

Tara ’s on the go off the clock, too.

One of her more challenging extracurricular trips came in July, 2008. After signing off at the Californian, Tara strapped 45 pounds to her back and walked from Yosemite Valley along the John Muir Trail to the Summit of America’s tallest peak in the lower 48 states, Mt. Whitney – she covered about 230 miles in three weeks.

Oh, and change that to Nomad with a notepad plus camera. Tara recently launched a photography business showcasing her travel and nature photography.
