For the Lely boys cross country team, Friday was a day to remember.
For the Lely girls, it was a day to forget.
Still, both teams did what they needed to do at Class 4A Region
3 meet, dvancing to next Saturday's state meet in Tampa.
Running at Boynton Beach's John Prince Park, the Lely boys
finished second behind South Plantation, led by Joel Gascon's
ninth-place finish.
"The guys had a great effort," Trojans coach Mark McGarity said.
"They proved that they can pull together and go for the big time.
It was a phenomenal day, the best they've run all year."
Heidi Miller placed sixth for the Lely girls, who took third
place behind Spanish River and Cooper City.
But McGarity expected more, and says he hopes Friday's
lackluster effort will inspire them to perform better at state.
"The girls had a very eye-opening experience," he said. "They
realize they have to get their focus on running the kind of race
they need to run next weekend.
"Maybe this will wake them up and bring them together."
