Passes meet the future

When we think of crossroads, we think of intersections of asphalt. Or intersections of time.

Collier County's inlets or passes -- where the Gulf meets inland waters -- are crossroads of their own for boaters.

Four of them, from Wiggins Pass to the north to Gordon Pass to the south, are shown here in aerial photographs made last month.

Their surroundings include a cross-section of development levels, from very little at Clam Pass to a lot at Gordon and Doctors passes. The heaviest development in the group, inland of Wiggins Pass, will get even heavier if a marina is converted into a high-rise. There, too, is a crossroads.
