In the championship match last Sunday, the Sharks blanked host Braden River, 1-0, with Jamie Lockie scoring her fifth goal of the tournament and third against Braden River. The finals was a rematch of Saturday afternoon's 2-0 Sharks victory in which Lockie scored both goals. She had one in a 3-1 semifinals win over the South Hillsborough Green Hornets.
Meaghan Barry scored the lone goal in the tournament opener against the Tampa Lady Lightning, with Lisa Martinez getting the assist. Martinez and Lizzie McNamara assisted on Lockie's goals in the first game against Braden River and Marissa Calhoun scored a goal against the Green Hornets.
Goalkeepers Calhoun and Gaby Passidomo combined for three shutouts over the weekend and got strong defensive help from Alexa Zavada. Vanessa Beretta, Rachael Brothers, Ryan Iamurri, Fabiana Kobleur and Gabi Paisan also played well during the tournament.
The under-12 Sharks begin league play this Saturday.
The Naples Christian Academy girls volleyball finished the season in third place out of 14 teams in the Suncoast Junior High League of Southwest Florida after a strong showing in the postseason tournament last week.
The team comprised of 13 and 14-year-olds made it to the final four after defeating St. Elizabeth Seton last Monday, 25-9, 25-20, but lost in the semifinals to Fort Myers Christian in three games, 18-25, 25-22, 13-15.
NCA was led by the setting of 8th graders Nicole Johnson and four-year starter Erin Zampell.
The starting hitters were Alex McLay, Tabor Joseph, Lauren Lutz and Sarah Wickham.
"Our defense was the key to competing against a team that was so tall," said coach and athletic director Ben Davison.
"Alex and Erin had well over 10 digs each."
