Yokel to speak Tuesday at Collier Audubon Society meeting

Former Florida Audubon Society President Bernie Yokel will talk about the health of Naples Bay at a meeting Tuesday of the Collier County Audubon Society.

Yokel's history in Collier County dates back to 1970, when he opened a marine research station at what is now Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. He was science director at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida from 1975 to 1984.

In 1979, he was instrumental in writing a study of Naples Bay that made recommendations to improve the bay's health, some of which have yet to be implemented.

Tuesday's program, presented with the Old Naples Association, is free and open to the public. It starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Conservancy auditorium on Merrihue Drive off Goodlette-Frank Road.

On Wednesday, the Old Naples Association is offering a tour of the bay with Yokel from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. For more information and boat reservations, call 261-1978.
