Get Out: Nov. 7, 2003

Fun things to do on and around Marco Nov. 7-13.

This weekend

Still playing

The sixth annual Marco Island Film Festival still has three days left, so go see one of the many (there are more than 50 to choose from) films showing. My picks: "Tom Dowd and the Language of Music", a must-see documentary about a nice guy with musical genius, showing at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at Mackle Park; "Robot Stories," a collection of wacky -- yet modern -- vignettes, showing at noon Nov. 8 at Marco Movies; "Break A Leg," director Monika Mitchell's impressive first feature film about a luckless actor who takes the "good luck" phrase literally, showing at 9:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at Marco Movies; and finally, "American Cousins," with a cast of recognizable faces, about how two strains of distant relatives with different lives and cultures come together in the name of family, showing at 7 p.m. Nov. 8 with the Booze Cruise and again at 3:15 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, at Marco Movies.

For a listing of all the films, visit www.marcoislandfilmfest.com and click the "Festival Program" icon. Then click the "Film Schedule" link for times and locations of films. Call 642-3378 for further ticket or film information.

Daily

Ducky dinner

Duck-hunting season is upon us, but you don't have to leave Marco Island to bag a duck --and you don't have to cook it, either. The House of Mozart restaurant does it for you.

I can't say enough about Chef Alfred's roasted Long Island duckling! It's one of the best entres you'll ever eat -- unbelievably succulent, tender, tasty duck meat enveloped in crackling, golden skin.

House of Mozart is at 151 S. Barfield Drive in the Shops of Marco. Reservations are accepted and strongly recommended; call 642-5220. Lunch and dinner are served from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. You can dine in, carry out or have a meal catered.

Continuing

Mom's moving in

The Marco Players have begun their 2003-2004 season with "Social Security," an adult comedy by Andrew Bergman (screenwriter of "Blazing Saddles" and "The In-Laws"). An upscale New York couple's perfect life begins to unravel when the wife's sister and brother-in-law -- who have a handful of domestic challenges of their own -- foist the woman's crotchety mother upon them. The fast-paced comedy is witty and racy -- but definitely not for the kids. Shows are at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and at 3 p.m. every Sunday through Nov. 23. Call 642-7270, or you can buy tickets ($16 for adults) at Island Trends in Marco Town Center Mall.

The final 'Matrix'

Marco Movies host the annual Marco Island Film Festival through Sunday, Nov. 9, showing a wide variety of independent films at its four-screen complex at Mission Plaza.

But one mainstream movie, "The Matrix: Revolutions" is being screened during the festival at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. through Saturday, Nov. 8.

Early reviews suggest that the movie's eye candy transcends its philosophy, hence reviewer observations such as "triumphant visuals short-circuit anything resembling abstract thought," "a voyage that's worth taking despite itself to see how the damn thing wraps up," and "an improvement over its babbling predecessor."
