Guest editorial: Keeping the good news good

Economically, this country of ours has been crawling for the past couple of years. Recently, it has been walking -- briskly. As the latest employment numbers show, it's about to begin running.

OK, a drop from 6.1 percent to 6 percent unemployment may not make it seem like happy days are here again, but on top of scads of other encouraging data, this figure reported Friday clearly indicates that we are headed for a terrific stretch of job growth.

President Bush should feel elated. His tax cuts are working. But as some of the wisest economists are saying -- Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan among them -- the federal government needs to cut down on spending to bring the deficit under control. Otherwise, there will be major problems with an economy-slowing debt as baby boomers begin retiring some years from now and signing up for Social Security and Medicare.

Today's good news could stay good news for a long, long time -- but only if the president and Congress act responsibly.
