Reality programming for gardens

It's "Survivor," without TV stars but with a very real twist: This calendar is a month-by-month education on which plants and trees can stand Florida's extremes of sun and rain and still thrive in your yard.

The South Florida Gardening Calendar and Plant Survival Guide, published by Lee County master gardeners, has a 12-month calendar illustrated by color photographs, including one of a blooming clamshell orchid from Naples photographer Connie Bransilver and 11 from Stephen Brown, Lee County University Extension agent. The page for each month also includes gardener's tips or notes for that month; survival tips for particular weather problems that may affect plants; and recommendations for plants that survive that season's problems well.

The calendar, $7, is available in Naples at Driftwood Garden Center. It is also available at the Lee County master gardeners' plant sale today and Sunday during "Bromeliads USA" at Terry Park, Fort Myers (see listing under Get Growing, this page).

To order a calendar by mail, send a check for $8.50, payable to Lee County Extension Services, to Survival Guide Calendar, Lee County Extension Services, Terry Park, 3406 Palm Beach Blvd., Fort Myers, FL 33916.
