Today, the Cougars (18-6) will attempt to stay on the path to the state volleyball title.
Barron travels to Jupiter today for the Class 5A Region 3 semifinals. The Cougars will play St.
Thomas Aquinas (20-8) for a spot in the regional title game against the winner between host team Jupiter (22-2) and Cooper City (20-8). The championship game begins at 7 p.m.
The last time the Cougars got this far in the regional tournament, they lost to Clearwater in the 2000 Class 4A Region 3 title game. Since then, Barron won the Class 4A-12 title in 2001 and finished runner-up in 2002, losing in the quarterfinals both seasons.
This season, the Cougars moved up in class to 5A and beat Gulf Coast in a close four-set game for the District 13 crown.
They followed that with a three- set win over Palm Beach Dwyer in the regional quarterfinals.
The Cougars will bring their all-time assists leader Nichole Lien and single-season kills, aces and digs record holder Arielle LeBoulch to Jupiter. It won't be easy, as semifinal opponent Aquinas was ranked seventh in Class 5A in the latest sports writers poll. Jupiter was ranked sixth.
The last time a Collier County team reached the state semifinals, St. John Neumann won the Class 2A Region 3 title in 2000.
