Golf: Tamulis close to earning full status

Naples' Kristin Tamulis came within one shot of earning full, or Priority I, status on the Futures Tour at its qualifying tournament in Lakeland on Friday.

The 72-hole event was shortened to 54 holes due to rain. Tamulis, who starred at Florida State, had scores of 76, 71 and 77 for a 224 score, one stroke out of Priority I status, which automatically puts those players into tournaments.

Still, Tamulis should be eligible for almost all of next year's events on the tour, the developmental tour of the LPGA Tour.

The top five on the money list at the end of the year automatically get tour cards for the following year.

Tamulis failed to advance out of sectional qualifying at LPGA Tour Q-School two months ago.

The area's four other players did not come close to earning full status. Carrie Dykstra and Kristy Gleason both finished at 231, while Fort Myers' Kelly Sauger was at 254. Naples amateur Pam Nelson missed the 18-hole cut with a 98.

Bonita Springs' Catherine Cartwright played the Futures Tour this year and finished eighth on the money list. She then earned her 2004 LPGA Tour card at its qualifying school, sharing medalist honors.
