Editorial: Domestic violence

The work that counselors, police officers, prosecutors and judges do with domestic violence is important. Extremely important. Even life-and-death important.

That is brought to light with an inspirational twist by prosecutors for the Southwest Florida State Attorney's Office. In a story published in this newspaper on Sunday, the effort against domestic violence is referred to as "homicide prevention."

Well put. It reminds us all that batterings, left unchecked, too often escalate to murders.

"Homicide prevention" accentuates the positive in a field that is grueling and stressful for those who choose to work there.

The story about domestic violence specialist Deborah Schwartz being named the region's Prosecutor of the Year gives us an opportunity to salute all professionals who choose to take the challenge seriously.
